- [Our History](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2017/03/02/our-history/): Weardale Flower and Garden Club was formed in 1978 by a group of flower and gardening enthusiasts.  As a registered charity we are affiliated to NAFAS (National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies) which has around 55,000 members nationally.  We ‘belong’ to the Northumberland and Durham Area.  Being a part of NAFAS gives us access to regional and national shows, a magazine, educational courses, competitions, and social events, as well as discounts at suppliers, eg Country Baskets.

- [RHS UPDATE](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2020/04/30/rhs-update/): All RHS gardens and plant centres are now closed. This is in addition to RHS shows, Garden Events and school visits which have been cancelled until 30th June 2020. At Harlow Carr, Harrogate, the garden is closed, plant centre, library, learning centre and cafes. - [RHS Communities](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2020/04/23/rhs-communities/): The RHS has published its Blooming Brilliant News Issue 1 on the website.  It includes the ‘Help Us Grow a Rainbow’ initiative – as we know, rainbows have become an important symbol during these challenging times.  The initiative is to grow brightly coloured blooms in a rainbow design for all to see in our front gardens and public areas – if you can get the plants that is!! www.rhs.org.uk

- [MARCH MEETING IS GOING AHEAD](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2020/03/16/march-meeting-is-going-ahead/): Our speaker for Tuesday 17th March, Keith Mastaglio, has confirmed that he is still coming to our meeting on Tuesday evening at 7 pm to talk about Dianthus and Carnations.  The Parish Council have not issued any restrictions on use of the Town Hall and we assume they will have hand sanitiser/soap for hand washing available in the toilets. - [March Meeting](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2020/03/04/march-meeting-3/): Tuesday, 17th March 2020 7 pm in the Town Hall, Wolsingham. Gardening talk by Keith Mastaglio who grows Dianthus, Pinks, Border Carnations, and Pertpetual flowering Carnations.  £100 of his plants will be raffled, and he will be bringing others for sale. Visitors and new members welcome to come along.  We look forward to seeing everyone at our first gardening talk of the year.
- [EVENT AT EGGLESTON HALL](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2020/03/04/event-at-eggleston-hall/): To celebrate British Flowers Week, Heidi Varley – who came to our Feb meeting – is organising an event at Eggleston Hall on 16th June 2020, 3.30 to 7 pm.  There will be 3 elements to the afternoon – a one hour tour of the gardens with Malcolm Hockham; afternoon tea in the Coach House; and Talk and demo by Heidi; followed by time for shopping in the gift shop and gardens (with 10% discount).  Everyone also receives a posy of Pinks Flowers.  Tickets are £30. If you are interested in going, Barbara/Janice will take names at our March meeting.

- [Subscriptions](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2019/12/30/subscriptions/): 2020 annual subscriptions have been kept at £25, and are payable at our February meeting. Visitors are most welcome to attend a max of two meetings in the year, at a cost of £5 per visit.

Its our AGM followed by a talk and dem by Heidi Varley of Pinks Flowers. In Autumn 2018 Heidi established a flower farm at Cotherstone, and grows British, scented and delicate flowers which she sells at several local outlets, as well as supplying individuals for weddings, events etc. Heidi will tell us of her journey establishing the flower farm, and show us examples of foam free Spring arrangements using both fresh flowers, and some dried from her […]

- [Christmas Meal](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2019/10/21/christmas-meal-2/): Over 30 members have already booked a place for our Christmas Meal to be held on 17th December, at 7 pm, at Buon Appetito, Wolsingham. - [Charity Open Night](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2019/09/26/charity-open-night/): Tickets are now on sale for our 2019 Charity Open Night, on 4th November at Wolsingham School. Nick Grounds is a celebrity florist and will use £500 worth of flowers to create seasonal displays – which will all be raffled at the end of his demonstration. Tickets are £10, which includes wine and nibbles from 6/30 pm, with Nick starting his dem at 7 pm. Tickets from Barbara tel 528071, Janice 529381, or from Daisy Chain Florists in Stanhope.
- [£800 raised for Teenage Cancer Trust](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2019/09/26/800-raised-for-teenage-cancer-trust/): Many thanks to everyone who supported Susan and friends who made hundreds of buttonholes at Wolsingham Show. An amazing £800 was raised from donations, and a cheque was sent to the Teenage Cancer Trust on 9th September.

Its a speaker from Linnels Farm, Hexham – a centre focussed on food and gardening. Hopefully our speaker, Karen Phillips, a horticulturalist, will be bringing a selection of spring bulbs for sale. We will also have our November open night tickets on sale to members, before sales are opened up to the public. Non members very welcome to come along.

- [AUGUST MEETING](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2019/08/10/august-meeting/): Please remember this meeting will be at St Annes Centre, West End. Its Chairman’s night, which means doing something completely different! On 20th August you have the opportunity to join a bowling competition (under our own rules!), compete in a club quiz, and enjoy a pizza supper and a glass of wine. We hope to see you there. - [Save the date - September event](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2019/06/08/save-the-date-september-event/): Friends of Hamsterley Millenium Garden have organised an evening with Alistair Baldwin – Garden and Landscape Designer. This is on Friday 13th September in Hamsterley Village Hall, 6.30pm Nibbles and Wine, 7.15pm Talk. Tickets £6pp, in aid of Bishop Auckland Women’s Refuge.
- [Visit to RHS Harlow Carr, Harrogate](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2019/06/08/visit-to-rhs-harlow-carr-harrogate/): We have booked our group visit to Harlow Carr for Saturday 29th June 2019, leaving Wolsingham Market Place at 9 am. This is our free annual visit as an affiliated member of the RHS, and therefore the £11 entrance fee is waived for all members of our party. We are not booking a bus, as this is an additional visit to our planned programme. - [May meeting](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2019/05/15/may-meeting/): Our May meeting, on 21st at 7pm in the Town Hall, will be quite different. Hannah Price has a design studio in Newcastle which specalises in using natural, and garden style flowers for events, weddings and corporate functions. She also creates floral arrangements for magazines and other publications. We will also need final payment for the June outing to Martin Fish’s garden please. This day trip is now fully booked, but Janice will take any additional names to add to a waiting list.
- [19TH MARCH MEETING](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2019/03/11/19th-march-meeting/): Derek Armstrong is now unable to join us, but we have been so lucky to book the amazing JOHN DALTON of Carlisle, who will be showing us designs for Spring Flowers. It promises to be a great night, and we look forward to seeing you … and there will be some brilliant flowers for raffles!
- [FINANCIAL DONATION](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2019/02/23/financial-donation/): We were delighted that Julie Foster was able to attend our February meeting and accept our cheque towards the High House Chapel appeal. The money was raised at our Christmas open night, and a further donation is to be made to Wolsingham Primary School Play Equipment Appeal, at our March meeting. Thank you to everyone who attended our Christmas event, and made these donations possible.
- [MARCH MEETING](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2019/02/23/march-meeting-2/): At our March meeting (19th, 7pm, Wolsingham Town Hall) Derek Armstrong – florist, floral designer, and national demonstrator, will be showing us designs for Spring Flowers. Derek has worked for 30 years as a florist, and also works with the BBC and ITV on documentaries and period dramas. We will have £100 worth of spring flowers for our raffle. We look forward to welcoming members, and visitors.
- [WILLOW WEAVING WORKSHOP](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2019/02/23/willow-weaving-workshop/): Jo-Anne Bolton will be running our willow workshop at St Annes Centre, West End, Wolsingham, on Saturday 30 March, 10 am to 1 pm. The cost is £25 which includes all instruction, materials, tools and scones/coffee. Please bring your own secateurs. You will make one large, or some smaller, garden supports. Max 12 places. - [GARDEN TOUR](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2019/01/31/garden-tour/): Members may be interested in a 5 day garden tour being advertised by Weardale Motor Services – Kent’s Gardens, Wines and Railway Lines, 29 July to 2 August 2019. 4 nights dinner b and b at Chatsworth Hotel, Hastings, with visits including Canterbury, Sissinghurst, Leeds Castle and Great Dixter. £321.
- [February meeting](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2019/01/24/february-meeting-2/): On 19th February, following our AGM, we welcome Lee Brownson who will give a talk on the Auckland Project, including progress on the development of the walled garden and garden restaurant, which we plan to visit when complete. Work started on the garden in 2017, and after extensive groundworks, planting is due to commence. The restaurant is a striking, contemporary structure designed by Japanese architects.
- [Committee Meeting](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2019/01/24/committee-meeting/): A Committee Meeting is scheduled for 10.15 am on Wednesday 30th January, in the Chapel. An agenda has already been issued, but key items for discussion are the 2019 programme, and preparation for the AGM on 19th February.
- [2019](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2018/12/29/2019/): We look forward to welcoming back members, and for new members to join us, on Tuesday 19th February, at 7 pm in the Town Hall, Wolsingham. Thank you to everyone for your support in 2018. We had a great year of meetings and events, and look forward to more fun in 2019, which will be our first year as corporate members of the RHS.

- [Christmas Tree Festival at Ushaw College](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2018/11/25/christmas-tree-festival-at-ushaw-college/): Members will be supporting the Christmas Tree Festival at Ushaw College. This launches Friday 30th November at 5pm with the lighting of the St Cuthbert’s Chapel Christmas Tree. The festival of Christmas trees decorated and lit by local flower arrangers and enthusiasts, follows the theme of our best known and much loved seasonal songs and carols. £5 entry, or annual pass.
- [Jonathan Moseley](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2018/11/25/jonathan-moseley/): Immense thanks to everyone who supported our Christmas Open Night, which was a huge success, with a full house. Jonathan Moseley did an amazing demonstration for us, the best ever in our 40 years! Thanks also to those who had stalls selling Christmas cards, cakes, crafts and decorations – a great shopping opportunity for our members and visitors. Donations to be made to the play equipment for Wolsingham Primary School appeal, and the High House Chapel appeal, asap.
- [Bulbs](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2018/11/02/bulbs/): Very many thanks to all members who helped with the planting of our 4,000 daffodil bulbs during the past three weeks. Also thanks to staff from George White Estate Agents who helped us. Bulbs have been planted at: Demenses Mill Wolsingham Churchyard Various locations on the Wheelchair Walk We hope everyone enjoys the display in the Spring, which celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Club. This planting was made possible through generous support from Councillor Anita Savory, and Weardale AAP.

- [October meeting - Autumn Produce](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2018/09/25/october-meeting-autumn-produce/): Jo Anne Bolton’s willow weaving is brilliant to see. She will show us basic techniques, and bring along examples of her work, including plant supports and items suitable for the garden. If sufficient people are interested, we will arrange a follow up workshop in 2019. Please dont forget our Autumn Garden Produce stall. Please bring along anything you have grown or made, or have spare in the garden – jams, chutneys, spare plants, split herbaceous plants, spare fruit, veg etc. Thankyou!

- [Christmas Open Night](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2018/09/25/christmas-open-night-2/): Tickets are now on sale for our Christmas Open Night on Tuesday 20th November, at 7 pm, at Wolsingham School (bottom site). Jonathan Moseley, is an international floral designer, UK Ambassador for British Flowers, and TV personality. His demonstration is entitled ‘Forty Years of Berries, Blooms and Baubles’, and £500 of flowers will be raffled on the evening. Tickets are £10, incl refreshments, and available from Daisy Chain, Stanhope, and Barbara (tel: 01388 528071).

- [Chairman's Night, Tuesday 21st August](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2018/08/17/chairmans-night-tuesday-21st-august/): Please remember that our August meeting is in St Annes Centre, Recreation Ground, West End, Wolsingham, at 7pm. There is parking at the centre. Chairman’s Night is when we do something completely different to our usual flower/gardening events. This year it is a Fashion and Puddings night – welcome drink, a fashion show from a retailer in Barnard Castle, and puddings tastings, along with the usual raffles. Visitors are most welcome, at £4pp. Please come along; it will be a fun night.

Martin Fish, BBC broadcaster, RHS judge, author and professional gardener will be speaking to us about his life in gardening, showing us slides of his gardens and current developments in horticulture. This is also an opportunity to promote our Club. Barbara and Susan did the flowers on Monday in the central walkway. - [39th Birthday Night](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2017/05/20/39th-birthday-night/): A brilliant night on Tuesday 16th May, with a great turn out of members to celebrate our 39th Birthday, in aid of the British Heart Foundation’s Red Appeal.  Members wore red, we had a dem by Kathryn Hume using red flowers, our cake was iced in red roses, and we had a red tombola!  In addition we enjoyed a glass of fizz with our cake and raised £150 for the British Heart Foundation. Well done everyone, and thanks!

- [Peat based compost](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2021/05/16/peat-based-compost/): The sale of peat-based compost is set to be banned after years of delays, the Government will announce this week. Peat compost, often sold as  ‘multi purpose’ compost, with no clear labelling showing that it contains peat.  The majority is imported from Ireland and eastern Europe, but some is still dug in the UK.  The damage to wildlife in peatlands is devastating and the carbon footprint is huge. According to the RSPB every year UK gardeners are responsible for 630,000 tonnes of carbon emissions by buying peat compost or plants grown in peat. - [Japanese style blossom to brighten 'grey' British cities](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2021/03/02/japanese-style-blossom-to-brighten-grey-british-cities/): Japanese style blossoming tree circles will brighten up Britain’s ‘greyest’ cities under plans by ministers and the National Trust – including Newcastle.  The charity has consulted residents to choose the British trees with the best blossom, settling on cherry, plum, hawthorn and crab apple.  The plans have Government support and MPs will each be given a blossom tree bythe National Trust to plant in their constituencies.

- [Botanic Garden, Durham](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2021/01/27/botanic-garden-durham-2/): Like ourselves, the Friends of the Botanic Garden Committee, have been struggling to plan their 2021 programme.  They have decided to postpone all speakers from January to July incl., and are also looking to organise virtual talks on line.  2021 Day trips have also been cancelled, in favour of visits to local gardens for which members will be expected to provide own transport, and conform to Government guidelines in place at that time.
- [Chelsea moved to September](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2021/01/27/chelsea-moved-to-september/): The 2021 Chelsea Flower Show, which would have taken place between 18 and 23 May, has now been moved to September 21-26. It is hoped that in September millions more people will have been vaccinated so mass outdoor events will be able to go ahead safely, with 140,000 predicted to attend over six days. Ticket holders will be contacted by the RHS about options for a refund if they cannot attend in September.  Thousands of people have tickets bought in 2019 which are still valid.

- [The Auckland Project](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2020/12/04/the-auckland-project/): £212000 has been awarded by Historic England towards essential repairs of historic features in the outside spaces surrounding Auckland Castle. The project includes restoration of the Bishop’s Steps providing access to the Walled Garden, as well as the creation of a number of new gardens and areas previously not open to the public.
- [Wildflower Verges](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2020/12/04/wildflower-verges/): More than 97% of meadows have been destroyed since the thirties, amid the intensification of agriculture, making the 238,000 hectares of road verges across the UK a vital habitat for pollinators. Highways England have announced that all new major roads will have wild flower friendly verges that could boost the numbers of birds and bees.  Vibrant road verges will be created as standard on new roads over 300 miles in England, using low nutrient soils, which will be seeded with wildflowers, or left to grow naturally. The government has pledged to build 4,000 miles of new road by 2025.

- [Chelsea Flower Show 2021](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2020/10/24/chelsea-flower-show-2021/): CHELSEA – 18-23 May 2021 Tickets on sale to RHS members from 26 October, and from 30 October for non members.  However, the show will welcome 140,000 over six days, compared with 168,500 over five days in 2019.  Tickets will be in short supply, especially as many people have transferred tickets bought for 2020 to 2021 plus social distancing has reduced numbers. Once inside the show visitors will be expected not to mingle with others outside their household.  Staff will be patrolling the grounds making sure safe social distancing takes place.

- [Lockdown rats head to gardens!](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2020/10/07/lockdown-rats-head-to-gardens/): Rentokil has reported an 80% surge in visits to its website, and pest controllers report over 20% increase.  Evidently rats are turning to gardens and compost bins with the rise in people eating at home and in their gardens, rather than in restaurants. Don’t put any bread, pasta etc., or fatty meat and cooked items onto the compost heap….. otherwise you will have unwelcome visitors!

- [£14m of drugs found in Dutch flower cargo](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2020/08/08/14m-of-drugs-found-in-dutch-flower-cargo/): A £14 million haul of cocaine and amphetamine has been seized by Border Force officers, after it was hidden inside a lorry load of flowers. The vehicle, travelling from the Netherlands to the UK, was stopped at the Eurotunnel entrance.  Officers found containers of sunflowers and roses with a ‘false floor’ where the drugs were hidden.

- [RHS](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2020/07/09/rhs/): The RHS has now cancelled the Hampton Palace Garden Festival – which had been postponed until September.  Similarly, Hyde Hall Flower Show, and Rosemoor Flower Show are also cancelled. This means that all remaining shows in 2020 will now not take place.

- [NGS gardens](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2020/06/03/ngs-gardens/): There will be no gardens open this year under the National Gardens Scheme – for the first time in 93 years.  The NGS was expected to see 3,700 private gardens open to the public this summer to raise money for nursing charities including Marie Curie and Macmillan.  The Covid-19 crisis and lockdown conditions have meant that this year the scheme has been cancelled, with some instead recording “virtual garden tours” as the next best thing. These can be viewed through the NGS website.

- [WOLSINGHAM OPEN GARDENS, 28TH JUNE 2025](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2025/04/16/wolsingham-open-gardens-28th-june-2025/): We are providing teas for NGS open garden visitors, at St Annes Centre, from 2-5pm. The committee will set up between 12 and 1 pm, and clear up between 5 and 6 pm. Immense thanks to all members who have so far committed to contributing a cake for the tea, and have offered to help in the hall on the day. Contributions can be left on Friday 27th June, at Barbara’s, 68 west end, Susan’s at 58 West End, or Ruby’s in the Front Street; or dropped off at the hall on the day. All proceeds are for club funds.

- [Tuesday 16th April](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2024/04/12/tuesday-16th-april/): Our demonstrator is Ann Simpson from York, who will be showing us designs using seasonal flowers.  Ann has been a NAFAS demonstrator for many years, and is an entertaining speaker. All her flowers will be raffled at the end of the demonstration. We will also be taking names for our open garden visit in May, where we will be serving Pimms and canapes, with the option of a curry at the Black Lion, Meadhope street, afterwards.

- [GRANT AWARD](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2022/05/23/grant-award/): We are delighted to inform members that we have been awarded a community grant from Believe Housing.  This is to fund our July meeting, when we have invited a national demonstrator, Lucy Richardson, to give a talk and demo on flowers and crafts. - [FLOWER FESTIVAL AT WOLSIGHAM CHURCH](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2022/03/17/flower-festival-at-wolsigham-church/): We are involved in the Flower Festival, which will run from the 14th to the 22nd May 2022. Opening times are Saturdays and weekdays 10 am to 4 pm, and 12 noon to 4 pm on Sundays. - [MEMBERSHIP FEES 2022](https://weardaleflowerandgardenclub.org/2022/01/28/membership-fees-2022/): Most existing members will not pay any membership fee this year, as payments have been carried forward from 2019. For new members the annual membership fee is £25, or if you have attended as a visitor in the past year this is reduced to £20.   We look forward to seeing you at our first meeting of the year on 15th February 2022, at 7 pm, in the Methodist Church, Front Street, Wolsingham.  We have a demonstration and talk on Spring Flowers.
